Project 2

Task Five

I did have an idea in my mind on what I wanted to do when we got given our project brief, this is when I found out that we had to make a professional portfolio on something that we would want to continue it in the future. When we got assigned the brief I was really into the quirky styles of fashion nowadays as well as street photography, I’m still am, so I thought why not stick the two together and do fashion and street photography in one.

Research- The first thing that I did was research the history of fashion photography and I found out all sorts of things like when it first started, how it started and who was the first photographer that took fashion photographs in particular. I did found out a lot of information when I typed ‘history of fashion photography’ into google and I was amazed to see that it did start back until the early 1900s which I was not expecting. A lot has changed since fashion photography first started, for example the fashion itself has changed as well as how we present fashion these days, what I mean by this is that magazines nowadays have the technology to make models and the fashion flawless with no mistakes at all.

Besides the whole history of fashion, I did do some research on other photographers that are quite popular in today’s fashion. Most of the photographers that I looked at are photographers based in America and do a lot of client related work, something that I would love to do in my future career.

Bryant Eslava is a great example of a fashion/lifestyle photographer that I have used as one of my inspirations in my work as I really do think his work is amazing. Within my final photographs I have tried to edit my photographs is the same way as him to make my work look similar to his own work as he is very successful in what he does and has even made a career out of it. He started doing photography when he was only sixteen years old and now hes twenty-five and still doing what he loves. Something that you can admire when looking through his Instagram profile, its pretty damn amazing.

Another photographer that I used as one of my inspirations was Sam Dameshek, he was the photographer that I was most interested work wise. The reason why I like him so much is not because of his work even though its very similar to Eslava, but I like how he works with a lot of fashion brands meaning a lot of his work is collaborative with fashion brands such as Bandi Melville etc. This is something that I would like to continue once finished college, maybe even go to university and study more on fashion photography.

I did look into three more photographers but they didn’t really stand out to me as much as Eslava and Dameshek as they didn’t really specify in fashion or street photography.

Production Plan- The first thing I did when trying to figure out how I was going to plan out this project was I made notes of all the different places I could go to for a photo shoot. Once I did this I then decided to make a real production plan with all the dates/weeks. In the end I came up with this:

(7th Sept – 9th Oct) – Research (case studies) and find models and different locations

916th Oct) – Presentation to show my classmates and tutors my research and work so far

(16th – 23rd Oct) – Test shoots and keep up to date with blog

(24th Oct- 1st Dec) -Photo shoot in my chosen locations with my models whilst blogging my process

(4th Dec) – Presentation to show my final photographs to my classmates

(4th – 15th Dec) – Evaluation and refinement

I did spend a lot of time on this production plan but when it came to the dates and the right week, I did not stick to it at all. The reason for this is that the models I had picked were either sick on the day of the photo shoot or couldn’t make it due to college or work. It was a bit of a pain but I definitely made up for it as I did have to use a backup model who could make any photo shoots without any problems getting there, this did save me a lot of time and made me schedule either though I wasn’t sticking to the plan.

Audience- After I made my plan, I thought about who was my audience was going to be, after doing some research on who is most interested in fashion nowadays, I found out it was teenagers and young adults.

After thinking about how I was going to present my work to my class and these teenagers and young adults, I thought about why not having a message behind my photographs. This is when I came across with the message “no matter what you wear you still look beautiful” as this then could go along with my theme of my quirky styles of fashion. I did contact a few magazines if they would be interested to put a couple of my final images into their magazines but unfortunately none of them had got back to me. So what I was thinking is putting a few of my images on my Instagram page with the message and a few hashtags see if this would work.

Test Shoots – I’m really happy with how my test shoots turned out as if I didn’t do this I don’t think my final photographs would have turned out like what they’re now. I did rely on these test shoots to get a bit of practise in before I started to photo shoot with my real models, the reason why I did this was to gain a lot of confidence in telling people what to do as well as knowing how to change the camera settings for the right environment etc. I know I said I wasn’t going to do any photo shoots in the studio, but I did want to have a go at it and see what it actually was like, as I’ve never been the photographer in the studio I’ve always been the model.

Overall, I did really enjoy the studio and I’m really pleased on how all my test shots turned out. I’m not going to use any for my final images but I definitely will putting them in my portfolio.

There was one test shoot that went okay, this was the test shoot with Amy when she was outside, I wasn’t really bothered on how Amy looked in this photo shoot as I was only focusing on the angles and positions on the camera. But I’m very happy that I did this photo shoot as then I was ready to do a photo shoot with my real models, as this now means I would now know what to say to them when trying to position them as well as getting the correct camera angles with making many mistakes. However, my other test shoots didn’t turn out as well due to the weather and it getting dark really early but I could work with some of them in Photoshop. I haven’t used any of my test shoots in any of my final images as I thought my real photo shoot photographs were good enough.

Final Shoots- In total I had three final shoots, one with Rona, one with Amy and the last one was with my older sister Abigail. I thought my final photo shoots went a lot better then my test shoots, I think this was down to me doing tests shoots beforehand as I had practised my angles as well as telling the model to do making me gain more confidence on every photo shoot.

Overall, I am really happy how all of my photo shoots turned out as I didn’t have to re shoot any, I was wanting to have a photo shoot in Lincoln but unfortunately none of my models could make it,  and I didn’t have enough time to find another model who was able to make it but this wasn’t a big deal at all. My favourite photo shoot out of all three would have to be the one with Rona. The reason for this is because most of my final images are of Rona, I feel like this was the only photo shoot that went to plan properly as the other two photo shoots were not last minute but they were quite rushed.

Feedback- On the 29th of November 2017 our tutor had planned a critique lesson, this is where we showed some of our final images to our classmates. I had mixed opinions when I got handed back some feedback but overall most of it was positive. Because I want to end on a high note I will start with the bad things and end with the good things.

One of the negative things my fellow classmates said was not all of my photographs fitted into my genre of urban fashion photography. At first I didn’t agree with them as I liked all of them but looking back at all my work I do see this now and I would put some of my final images into a different genre like ‘woodland photography’. The images that I am talking about is the two images of Rona that I took when she was in the woods. I am still going to use one of them for my final images but I am going to edit it differently in Photoshop so it doesn’t look like the woods as much as it did previously. Another thing that a classmate pointed out was that one of the photographs is a bit distracting due to one of the model’s elbow is cut off in the photograph, I didn’t see this whilst taking the photograph or even editing it but now when it was printed out on an A4 sheet of paper it was pretty obvious. Therefore, I am now going to edit this photograph again and try and make her elbow come back into frame.

A first positive thing that my classmates said about my work was that every photograph was very different to one another which made my work so far unique. Everyone also enjoyed my way on how I edited my photographs with the  warm colour effect which was something that I wasn’t expecting. I’m very pleased on how everyone reacted to my work as I’m going to use every bit of feedback to help all of my final images look they’re very best.

  • Do I have the right amount of images for the presentation(deadline date)?

Overall, I do have ten final images, and the brief does say a minimum of ten images so I do have the correct amount of images to show to everyone. However, I do have a couple of spares just in case I change my mind at last minute and don’t think any of my photographs would work, but apart from that I have the right amount for the deadline date.

  • Do my final images fit my theme?

In my opinion I do think my final images do fit my theme of quirky (urban) fashion photography but I do feel like I could have done a couple more photo shoots that were similar to my other photo shoots with a few more models that were different to the models I already had, just to make my portfolio have more of a variety than just three models, posing in different ways.

  • Are there any issues with the work? If so, what could I do better?

Problem 1- The main problem that I had with this overall project was with one of my models not making a photo shoot we had planned. Lily and I were meant to have a photo shoot on Wednesday the 22nd of November 2017, but unfortunately Lily couldn’t make it due to her doing some overtime at work.

Solution 1- To get over this problem I had one of my backup models step in for the photo shoot. Amy was very up for this photo shoot as she understood the reason why Lily couldn’t make it and she also wanted to help me out which I’m very grateful for.

Problem 2- Another problem that I had was the weather. This happened on the same shoot where Amy had to cover, the weather was not on my side at all this day. The wind was blowing in all different directions making it hard for me to get a good angle without any hair being blown in my model’s face etc, it also began to rain when we was just about to start and I didn’t have a cover to protect my camera from the wetness so we tried finding spots to take photographs that had cover as well as fit it with my theme. This made things very difficult.

Solution 2- There wasn’t really a solution to this problem as we were kind of in the moment and had to come up with solutions on the spot, but if I was to do an outside shoot again, I should really have checked the weather forecast before I went outside and did the shoot. But I now know that I would have to check before the actual shoot comes around as this would then give me time to plan where we could go and take photographs that would be suitable to the weather on that specific day.

Presentation- Monday 4th December was the initial deadline date we had to have at least ten final images photographed and edited ready to show on a presentation to the rest of the class. Everyone who gave me feedback was very happy with my final images, they did agree with me that one of the images stands out more than the others (yellow coat) but I obviously won’t be posting them on my social media like I did in my presentation.

I did get asked a few questions by my classmates, for example one of the questions was ‘How am I going to show my final images to my Audience?”  I replied with that my initial idea for my audience was going to be a local magazine from Sheffield, but this didn’t work out as they didnt get back in touch with me. I am still going to ask other local magazines if anyone is interested in my images etc. But for now I am going to be posting them on to my Facebook page and Instagram with the hashtags #fashionphotography.

Learning Outcomes –

In my brief that I was given by my tutor is had said that I had to “Critically reflect on learning to inform personal development.” I thought I would use the reflective cycle to explain in more detail of  what actually happened. The first thing that I actually did in the whole project was decide on what my actual portfolio was going to be about which after about twenty minutes after having a quick research on different types of photography that are out, I finally decided on “Fashion Photography”. This is when I started to research about fashion photography in more depth and get more to grip of the things you can do with it, I also researched quite a few photographers to see what they had to offer as well as help me get a better understanding on how to position the models as well as edit the final photographs. This research session helped me a lot as I did find a few photographers that I did like and would want to try and recreate a few images. Once I completed me research and my production plan, I thought it would be best to start a test shoot straight away as this would make me gain the confidence I would need before I actually started a real photo shoot, so what I did was get my friend Amy to help me out by being a model as well as being a stand in model to help me with all my test shoots which went to plan really well. After having a few test shoots with Amy and my younger cousins and I was ready and confident enough to actually do I real photo I planned with my first model Rona. Then after doing my first real photo shoot I thought it would be best to try and get two photo shoots in every week which did happen and I got the images I needed for my professional portfolio.

The feelings that I had during this project was mostly feeling scared as I was terrified that none of the images was going to turn out as well as they have done. It did make me feel a little bit less confident and make me not like me work as much as I was overthinking too much.  Another reason why I felt scared was that one of my models cancelled on my making me worried that I wasn’t going to get all my images and editing done on time as it had messed up my production plan/timetable. But once I had presented my work to my class mates all the feedback was positive and made my confidence come back up and make me like my work again.

Overall, I did really like how this project went along as everything slid into place, as if something went wrong something filled its place which was positive an example of this would be when my second model cancelled on me but luckily I had a back up model to  stand in for the model would couldn’t make any final photo shoots. But as the project goes I would say that I am pretty pleased on how all of the final images turned out as its exactly what I had in mind when I was given the brief and research my genre of photography. However, if I was to do this project again I think I would chose models that I don’t know as with Rona, I knew her from school so it wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be. But if I had chosen some models that I didn’t know this would have pushed my confidence higher as I would be going out of my comfort zone and pushing my boundaries.

The whole project itself in my opinion has been a huge success, I’m very happy with the finished final images as there are what I had in my mind when this project came to mind. I did want to push myself by having my models that I didn’t really know but unfortunately that didn’t quite go to plan.  But I think I would ask people from college from a different department, as this is still asking someone I don’t know but also its someone I can rely on them to make the photo shoot on time as they would be close by and will be able to make it on time. The things that I have learnt from this project is I have learnt a few things in Photoshop and lightroom, I tried to edit my photographs in the same way as one of my chosen photographers “Bryant Eslava”, which was have a yellow tint in most of the photographs as well as having a mess around with the shadows and highlights. Another thing I have learnt is that  fashion and lifestyle is definitely something that I want to carry on in my near future and maybe go on to university and study fashion a bit more.

Final Images –

My favourite final image with have to be either Rona sat on the bridge with the blurry background or it would have to be the one with my older sister as a model with the mustard colour coat. The reason why these two images are my favourite is because Rona’s image is all about the clothes as its what is only in focus which is the main focus of my whole portfolio, fashion. The reason why I like the other photograph as well is because of how the edit has turned out. The coat looks like the main focus of the whole photograph, this was not intended and I didn’t realise that this had happened until I put all the images on to one page on my presentation, but this could also be a bad thing as its taking my audience’s attention away from the other photographs, but then again not all of my images are going to be presented on one page.

One of the images that I’m not so keen on is where Rona is stood next to a tree in the woods. The reason why I’m not that fond of it is because it doesn’t really fit in with my whole urban theme as its more woodland, Dan, my tutor spotted this is out when we had our critique lesson last Wednesday and when looking at all my photographs on one page I can definitely see what he means.

Overall, I am very happy how all of my final images have turned out, they’re some that I am not that best pleased with but they were a lot better than others that I have taken on other photo shoots. I will be using all of these photographs in my portfolio as well as some of my test shots I took in the studio with Amy and some previous work in my first year at college, as this is then showing off the skills and different techniques I have in photography overall.

How will I make my video ‘interactive’?

I didn’t realise that I had to make my video interactive at first as I didn’t see anything on the brief that say we had to do this.

I didn’t have any idea how I would do this but our tutor suggested to have us get a DVD and DVD cover, then burn our video that has been uploaded to YouTube onto the disc as well as making a cover and a disc menu which I have no idea how to do. This would make my video interact with my audience as they are actually getting the DVD, putting it into a laptop then pressing play either with headphones or without.

Jess, a fellow suggested that I should try the website ‘canva’ which is an online software where you can create anything from posters to DVD covers.

I watched a tutorial on how to use this software as I have never heard it before and I didn’t know what to press anything that I didn’t know it was for.  After the video I now understood it a lot better and wanted to start edited straight away. I used one of the pre made ones as I liked one already and was what I had in mind, bearing in mind it was FREE and all the others you had to pay.

The first thing that I did was to upload a picture from my video that I thought was appealing to my audience (teenagers) which would make them interested and want to watch the video so I had to choose from two photographs that I narrowed it down to, which was thesescreen-shot-2017-03-02-at-18-51-43

In the end I decided to chose the first photograph because when I put it into the canva software it looked so much better with the effect and pre made one.

So I clicked on the button to make a new design.

Screen Shot 2017-03-03 at 09.22.23.png

I chose the album cover as I knew that it would be the right size and I wouldn’t have to panicking by cutting it down when it comes to it me putting it in the case.

Screen Shot 2017-03-03 at 09.23.02.png

I then chose the effect (pre-made) one just because I thought it was really cool looking and stood out to me when looking from all the other designs. It was also free which makes it a whole load better.

Screen Shot 2017-03-03 at 09.23.21.png

I then uploaded the video of one of my models to the page and it turned out like this, which I really liked apart from  the text which I hadn’t edited yet. I really liked the middle bit with the square and wiggly line just because I think this makes my CD cover look really professional as well as appealing to my audience as it a little bit different to other CDs.

Screen Shot 2017-03-03 at 09.23.46.png

I changed the font and added my name and the date just to add something to the bottom which I thought looked better then just it being bare.

I also thought it would be a really good idea for me, just to add my twitter and my Instagram just to get a little bit of self promo as well as it will look interesting to younger views as it has social media signs on it.

So I added my twitter and Instagram on to the front in the top corner because it also looked really bare like the bottom thats why I did my name and date at the bottom.

Final Cover

I really like how it turned out, and I’m really proud as its the first CD cover I have ever done.

Evaluation – Video

Thursday 16th February 2017

Project Brief –

For this project we had seven weeks to create either a short film or music video with or both audio (speech) and sound effects that is three to five minutes long. As well as the sound effects we have to make our video interact with our audience.  We have to create our own audio or get permission off someone else that has produced or either someone that owns some audio that we like.

On top of the filming and editing our videos we have to blog on here telling you what we are doing and how far we have come, just like our last project. We’ll make some presentations that we can present to our fellow students and tutors to get some feedback and improve our work so far.

Idea –

I didn’t know what to do at first as there was so much choice. I couldn’t make my mind up between a stop motion video or a music video. The reason why I wanted to do this stop motion idea was because most people in our class where going to be doing a time lapse, and I thought it would be a bit repetitive if I did one as well. So I changed my idea to either doing a music video or a stop motion. I did do some research on stop motion videos and I found out that it was very time consuming and took a lot of patient, which I don’t have. Therefore I decided to do a music video.

Plan A-

My first idea was a relationship that has just ended and they’ve having a hard time apart as they both still love each other. I wanted to have the actors in my video as dancers as well as I do know a couple of people that can do this. The whole point of this was to focus on the dancing part as I know Clifton park has a bandstand that I wanted to focus on as its really big and looks very nice for a photograph or for my very own music video.

I did like the idea of having flashbacks throughout the video, this would be when the dancers were dancing as this represents happy memories. Once the flashback was over it would cut to the present to where the video is in black and white and very depressing. I think this would work really well with the way I want to shoot things.

When it came to the filming day both of the dancers bailed on me as they wasn’t comfortable and too busy to come to Rotherham and film, so basically I had wasted 2 weeks waiting for these dancers to come up with a date where they were before free but they just cancelled instead so I had to come up with another idea over the weekend that was still based around the song that I had chosen, which is Leave Me Lonely – Ariana Grande Cover by Gabby Lindley and Hobbie Stuart (I did get permission from them).

Plan B-

The second idea was with a model thats having a tough time with life, with relationships, work, and family problems. I wanted to do something with water as I did some research on “Water Photography” I really like how the photographers I researched, were really good at how they photographed the water and water droplets.

The idea that I have in mind is really hard to explain but I would want the start of the video to be based water droplets and as the music video gets deeper into the story and as the music gets quicker and more intense the water droplets begin to turn red which represents the stress which is taking over the actor/actress’ life.

I had a conversation with my tutor and Amy (another student) who would agree to her being in the video as the actress who is stressed out. But my tutor wanted me to carry on my idea with the relationship. So I asked Amy and George who are students in my class if they would participate in my video and they were more then happy to do it.

Research –

I started to do my research on old music videos that I enjoyed in the past, like ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran is my all time favourite music video. The reason for this was my first idea (Plan A) with the whole dancers and the love story was basically based on this music video. I liked how the director had shot it with the different angles and panning which made the editing and the finished video look amazing as everything ran so smoothly. As I really liked the director’s work on this particularly music video, so I decided to do some research on this director who is Jake Grosling. He did a lot more music videos with Sheeran but these are not as good as the ‘Thinking Out Loud’ music video.

At the time Gabby Lindley only had a music video of her singing along with the song on Youtube, which was directed by a music producer and the owner of the cover with Gabby and Hobbie. His name is Alexander Wells. The reason why I research Wells was because he shot and directed the video, and he edited the video and turned it into black and white, which I didn’t like at first but after re-watching the video I grew to like it and wanted to used this effect  in my own video when I come to edit it.

Copyright Issues-

When I was researching sounds I came across copyright laws. I knew that this would stop me unless I got permission off the person who owns the song. The reason for me getting permission is, if I upload my video with permission, youtube will be able to take off my audio and leave it would no sound. So I had to choose I song that I could get permission off as soon as possible as i wanted to start filming straight away. Which is why I chose the song, Gabby and Hobbie’s cover ‘Leave Me Lonely’.

Production Plan-

Week One – For week one I’m going to get my music sorted meaning getting it downloaded and get it ready for when I come to edit and sound effects. I also wanted to create and make my own sound effects as this would mean I have more time for filming etc.

Week Two – For week two, I would like to start filming as it will save me a lot of time at the end for editing. Ive set my self a target for at least a week for editing and finishing touches.

Week Three – For week three, I would like to finish filming and do any reshoots that I need to do, as this still leaves me a whole week to edit and get ready for due date and show and tell to my fellow students.

Week Four – For week four, this is the final week before we have to show and tell and finish this whole project. This means a I have a week to edit and get everything perfect so there is not glitches and any flaws as at the end of this term I would like to eventually post this music video (if it goes to plan) online either on youtube or Facebook.

I didn’t really stick to this plan above as I did most of the filming and editing in the first week, the reason for this was because I wanted to get all my work done in the first week so I wasn’t panicking about my evaluation and making so improvements in time for the deadline date. I did this as I learnt this from the previous project as I had to rush in the last hour to get my evaluation done.

Test Work-

I did my test work on a field that was at the back of my house, I didn’t use models for this part as I was trying to focus on the photography side in my video. I filmed lots of different plants and trees in the wind. In the end I actually used some of my test shots in my final video.

I think with filming, in my opinion it went really well, I really enjoyed telling my models, Amy and George what to do and directing the whole video. Even though it was hard coming up with ideas and places to film in Clifton Park me, Amy and George had a lot of fun filming the video. However, I did want to go out and filming in different places not just Clifton Park but also Sheffield city centre and Rotherham town centre. The reason why we didn’t film in different places was because Amy and George still had their videos to film and get ready for the presentation day and deadline day. I think this would be one of things that I would change about my video.

When I started to edit the video in iMovie it didn’t take me long at all as I have worked with this software before, this was even before we even started this project. I finished editing the whole video within two days but this was before I had put in any text messages in the video. The whole text message idea didn’t come to me at start, it was something that came to me whilst we were filming when Amy was on the bench. To be honest I had no idea how to do this at first so I had to watch a lot of youtube videos so I can learn how to do it myself. After messing around with iMovie I eventually figured out how to do it and I was really pleased how the final thing looked.

Sound Effects-

With the sound effects I didn’t have any idea at first what to put into my video as I didn’t have the idea of the text messages. So I spent a whole 2 hours on youtube listening to different text alerts, which drove me insane but I eventually found one that I liked a fitted the music perfectly.

Screen Shot 2017-02-24 at 13.22.14.png

The way I got the sound effects to match the timing of the text messages in my video, I had to use youtube converter turn them into an audio which was MP3. This would make the editing a lot easier as the audio would only be on for a split second.

Overall, I think the song I chose worked really well just because it was very slow and had two parts (female and male) which made it easier for me to film but also a little bit hard as one part I didn’t have enough footage so it had to be a little bit short of the man singing in the video. But I liked my final video just because it fitted the song as well as want I wanted at the start of the project.

Final Video-

Reflection and Overall Opinions-

Overall, I am really happy with how my final video turned out, its exactly how I wanted it to look. I showed my family and fellow students and they really like the split screen part which was really hard to do but I’m really glad that I did it and kept it in the video as it represents a flashback. I know its not that clear but it still gives the idea that they were happy together and makes you wonder if they had met and are talking together. The only  thing that my tutors to do differently is the ending and add more sound effects. But I thought if I added some more sound effects it would be too much and take some of the tension away from the whole video.

For the ending it wasn’t really clearly that the two models made up as they weren’t ‘holding hands’. I didn’t do this in the first place just because I didn’t want my music video to have a happy ending, so I thought instead they could be just friends as its semi happy. But I’m really happy with how the ending turned out.

Overall, I felt comfortable doing this project as I liked how easy it was to put together. The only thing that I don’t really like is some of the clips in my video are really long. The reason why I did this was because I only had so many clips and I didn’t have enough time to go back out and film. As well as me running out of time, the models I was using had to focus on their videos as well as be in mine, this is why I have such long clips. However, if I was to do this whole project I would do parts of it in summer, as I think this would give a whole direct look to my video. I would also use different models just so it wouldn’t be so awkward and I would have a lot more time to film and get shorter clips.

My Finished Video

This is my completed video, I have uploaded this to Youtube and had a few comments back from my family members, fellow students and tutors.

I’m really happy with how it turned out as its what I had in mind when this project was first introduced to me.

Making Improvements

After presenting my (what I thought) completed video to my fellow students and my tutor, they gave me feedback that was mixed reviews. My tutor didn’t think I had enough sound effects in my video, but he had an idea to add either a conversation or laughing sounds when the video goes into a split screen which represents a flashback, this is to show that it was a good time and a good memory as the videos are in colour and will have nosies, the only problem with this is that the models that I chose don’t want to be recorded of them laughing, so I will have to find some sound effects on Youtube of a woman and a man laughing thats kind of in time with George’s laugh and Amy’s laugh, which will be very hard and stressful.

Screen Shot 2017-02-15 at 18.31.28.png

Another thing that he suggested was that he didn’t get the ending part as he didn’t know if they made up and are friends or if they got back together. I thought I made this clear as they were laughing together and enjoyed each others company and stayed as friends, even though I know where he’s coming from it would mean me having to re filming this part which could be very time consuming due to Amy and George having their own videos to film and edit.

Editing with iMovie

Once I had finished filming with Amy and George and had all the footage that will last in the three to five minutes. The reason why it has to be this long because this is what it says in our project brief. The song I chose is about three minutes and forty seconds which is perfect as this makes me have a lot of time to do what I wanted to do in my video once I’ve edited it.

The first thing that I did was import all my footage over onto the “videos page” in iMovie. The reason why I chose this software instead of using premier pro was because in previous years I’ve used this software and know quite a lot about it which made this project easier for me, as I also have a Mac at home which means I can work from home as well as in college on the mini Macs. I then imported the song and dragged it down onto the bar at the bottom as I found this was the best way to start editing.

As you can see in the above image all my footage that I shot with Amy and George is set out quite nicely making it easier for me to see what videos I’m going to use/edit. In some of the squares there is little orange bars at the bottom of the videos. This is what videos I’ve used so far, which helps me a lot as it doesn’t make me add the same video in twice. The way I got the footage into the bar (where you can edit it) was just to drag the video you want and drop into the place you would like it to be, you can move it around afterwards, it won’t stay there in a fixed position which is what makes this software really easy to use.

Once my song was covered with all the footage I wanted, this was time for me to start editing meaning cutting parts out, adding titles screens, credits etc. I added a ‘Title screen’ which I put on for four seconds. At first I didn’t know what to call me video as its a music video and you can’t really give it a name as most to date music videos just go straight into the video. The way I got around this was to use a quote from a song that meant a lot to me and will do to other people, which I thought was a nice touch.

For the start of it, I wanted all of the video to be in black and white just to give it an interesting vibe like the music video ‘The A Team by Ed Sheeran’ which is what I was kind of going for but with a completing different story behind it all.

The way I did this was to click on the video I wanted in a different effect. Then I clicked on the paint tray icon.

Then this little list of sliders appear. I clicked on the multi-colour on which is the exposure slider.

I changed the colour of the video to black and white by moving the little grey circle to the left all the way to make the it change colour. I did this with all the footage that needed to be in black and white.

Inserting Text Messages and Sound Effects

Once I had finished editing it was now time to add in the text messages and the sound effects. I didn’t want to do this at first as I didn’t know how you did this sort of thing, but after doing a little bit of research I found out how to do it so I went along with this idea. The first thing I did was to find a blue text message that was blank and a PNG on google, it took me a while to find one but I eventually did. I then edited this image as I added some text to go with what I wanted it to say and then I save it as an image and to my desktop so it would be easier to find when I needed it. I did the same with the other text message but obviously in a different colour and the speech bubble facing the opposite way. Once I had done a few messages (of each colour) it was now time to add them into my video. I did this by drag the right text message from my desktop into iMovie and over the clip I wanted this to be in, it then comes up with options if you want the image to be cutaway, green screen  picture in a picture etc. I chose the picture in a picture option as this would give me then option to crop and decide how long the image will be on screen for.

For the sound effects I wanted the iPhone text alert as I have an iPhone and I have done the text messages in the style of an iPhone. I searched ‘iPhone text alerts’ on Youtube and quite a few suggestions came up some were like a second long and the others with like forty seconds long, I listen to quite a few until a found the right one. Not going to lie it got me very annoyed and irritated quite easy.

I then converted the link ( on the website youtube converter, which turns youtube videos, songs etc into a MP3 song or video, meaning you can download this to any bit of technology. I downloaded this sound effect onto my desktop as its really easy to find and what take me long to move and edit my video so the text messages and sound effects will be in time with one another.

Filming with Amy and George

For my main and first idea, I did want to have dancers as the people in my video but unfortunately they could make any of the dates I had set for them to come to the park and film. So I had to scrap the whole idea and and now use my plan B which was to get a teenage girl to act and walk around the park looking sad and lonely, but once having a chat with my tutors I still wanted to do my whole idea that I originally had with the dancers but get two classmates to do it instead, that’s if they wanted to do it.

I asked Amy Newbould and George Worthington, and they seem up for it at first but they thought it would be cringey so I said to them of you feel uncomfortable at any time just tell me and we don’t have to carry on, but the seemed fine with the whole idea I had and wanted to start filming.

The location we did the filming in was in Clifton Park and in North Leverton where I live. At first we didn’t know how to start off a music video so we listened to the song over and over again just to get a feel and know the song a little bit better, so we thought why not doing something simple of one person walking around Clifton park one way and the other person walking around the other way as I had four minutes to fill as the song  I’m using is quite a long song.

George- The guy who sings in the song is the first person to start singing so we thought why not every time the guy sings George is on the screen and every time the girl sings Amy is on the screen. So I got George to walk into the park looking sad, it was hard to try and capture the moment and movement over it all, but I did a little pan as he walked into the park and I followed him etc.

Amy- The girl in the song doesn’t start singing until 1/4 of the way through so we got George to walk around the park a while, at this part I knew I would only have a little bit of footage as we didn’t film much at all, but I knew I would have to slow the clip down to make it seem like a longer and more interesting clip.

We didn’t film much on this day as it was very cold and near the ending of the day, so we decided to film a skittle more another day a wrap up warm so we could stay out for longer. I told George to where the exact same clothing as it would  look weird if the actors changed outfits halfway through the video.

The following week on the Thursday we dicided to do a whole day of filming as Amy and George both needed to there videos as well. We started to film at 10 in the morning both of the actors were wearing the same clothes like I had asked them to. We did some of George’s parts first just to get him out of the way as the guy who sings in the video isn’t in it that much whereas the girl is so with walked around Clifton park getting ideas of what to as Amy and George both know Clifton park a lot better then I do as I’m not around these parts. Because we already had George entering the park I wanted to create this with Amy as well so we walked to the other end to get to the second entrance of the park which wasn’t fancy as the one George walked through the pervious week. However we did get serval of shots just to make sure that there wasn’t any bumps of my behind the camera that’s could have knocked the camera accidentally as I did that to George’s firsts takes a few times.

We then just walked around the park in an ordinary fashion coming across any thing that would look good or could be turn into something good, we did this until more camera battery was flashing red and couldn’t do any more filming and by this time we had all the footage I wanted and it was know time to edit and get ready for the final presentation.

Throughout last week, I was working from home the reason for this was because I live in the middle of the countryside with lots of landscapes and interesting photograph opportunities.

I took this as an advantage as this would mean I wouldn’t have to travel far to get some of my filming done. I did a few test shots based around a berry, the reason for this was when you look at a photograph/video and you see an object on its own you automatically think that it’s lonely as there’s nothing else around this object. I used this idea to try and create and introduction to my video but I didn’t know how to. So I took my tripod down the field and decided to find the berry I saw early in the week and try and make a video and something interesting out of it.

In the end I got a few videos from a berry being in focus then slowing fading away and being blurry and focusing on the background instead, I thought this created a bit of tension as you don’t know what’s happening or what couple happen, which was I liked about my starting to my video.

I went down the field the following day just to get some backups just in cases anything happened to the original videos I was intend to use.

So Far…

Thursday 19th January 2017-

For my project two my original plan was to have dancers throughout my music video, but I thought this would happen and it has. One of the dancers has bailed on me, meaning I can’t do my original plan so I have changed the whole story and theme of my music video and moved on to my plan b, which isn’t too late for me to get all my test shots and editing done in time.

Monday 23rd January 2017-

I think my project 2 is going good so far, I have done a few test shots but some of them haven’t turned out that well, so I have done some reshoots, which I prefer which means I am learning from my past work and improving my skills to make the finished project better than the original test shots. Altogether I think this plan will actually turn out better than my first plan. This is because my original plan was very confusing and was a lot of work to do, whereas my backup plan isn’t that much of work but a little more editing this is why I have decided to give a week and a bit for editing, this is so I can make sure that everything is up to date and the final music video looks and runs smoothly.
